The Capuano School teaches Somerville’s youngest students to read and educates the
community about green schools. The twostory, 80,000-ft2 school is designed to accommodate 560 students from toddlers to first graders. It sits on the edge of a city park and is also a neighborhood resource with a full-size gymnasium, public gardens, soccer fields, and basketball courts.

Occupied since September 2003, the school is the first in New England to register with the U.S.
Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program. The
project received significant funding from the local utility and a Green Schools Initiative grant from
the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative.

Daylighting is a key high-performance feature to reduce energy and construction costs and
enhance the learning environment. Daylighting uses natural light to significantly reduce costs
from electrical lighting, and may improve student learning. Skylights on the top floor
brighten classroom play areas and art tables. Clerestory windows and light shelves capture
daylight on the ground floor.
