High Performance, "Green" or "Healthy" schools are beneficial to the environment as well as those who occupy its buildings.

The benefits are derived through energy conservation, water conservation, improved land use, and through the opportunity presented for education about sustainability by using the school as a "learning laboratory."

"Building Green schools is more fiscally prudent and lower risk than continuing to build unhealthy, inefficient schools." Greg Kats

"More than any other type of building, schools are an investment in our country's future."  Alex Wilson (in his testimony before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Oct. 2002)

High Performance, Healthy, Green schools are to a substantial extent based on the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), which is the national consensus green building standard.

An application of LEED for schools was developed by California schools, and is called the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS).

High Performance, Healthy, Green schools typically have better lighting, temperature control, improved ventilation and indoor air-quality which contribute to reduced asthma, colds, flu and absenteeism.  These schools improve learning, test scores and lifetime student earnings. These school also work to reduce operating costs which helps schools, districts and communities save money.
